1. Impressions: Final Fantasy III

After years of waiting and hours of playing everything Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy III has finally been released in North America for the DS. This is the one Final Fantasy game I've never played, but have been wanting to for a long time. But now I have my chance! I haven't played a ton yet since I'm still playing Final Fantasy XII. But from what I have seen it looks very promising. The coolest thing I've seen so far is what they did with the graphics after totally overhauling this game from the NES days. This game starts out with a beautiful CG movie scene. I'd have to say this is the best FMV I've seen on the DS. Usually they are lower quality and highly compressed to save space. But this one looks very sharp and closer to movies on the PS2. You can tell it is compressed, but it looks awesome! The game itself has been given a 3D makeover. It reminds me a ton of how the Final Fantasy games looked on the PSone. Especially the battles, they are totally 3D with different camera angles and movements like Final Fantasy VII. The DS does a great job handling these 3D graphics. There are a few spots it seemed sluggish, but it really isn't noticeable. The character design is pretty cool; it reminds me of how characters looked in FF: Crystal Chronicles. This game also has great sound. Once again there is an amazing soundtrack, well what I've heard so far. (Okay I've heard the soundtrack of the Internet already, so I know it's good.) And of course this game plays like any classic Final Fantasy game. But if you want you can use the touch screen to move your character around, or to control the battles. But the using the D-pad and buttons are way faster. I can't wait to see what else they've done with this game and plan to play it ASAP.
