I've been playing Blue Dragon since it came out, sort of on and off in between other games. I'm actually pretty far now, on the final disc, so this isn't really just my impressions. Oh well, Blue Dragon is a pretty cool game. I think it's pretty impressive for being Mistwalker's first title. First of all it looks and sounds great. By sound I mainly mean the music, since it was done by Nubuo Uematsu. It's another amazing soundtrack, minus the weird boss battle music. The voice acting is pretty good, but I'm playing in the Japanese where it always sounds good. The graphics are pretty sweet. The game looks great, like a sharp 3D cartoon with awesome environments. But the game does slow down and lag from time to time. This is mainly a problem in battles when there is a lot going on. it can get pretty bad at times. This is definitely one place that could have been improved. The game plays like most menu driven RPGs. It has a job system that allows you to learn abilities based on the job, you can combine abilities too. I've been building up all my jobs, but you could have a character stay on one job the whole game without too much of a problem. Attacking is pretty basic as there aren't too many different attacks. There is more of a variety of magic but I only really use a few good spells. This game is easy enough where you can beat anything with a few different spells and attacks. I've also came to the conclusion that items are pretty useless. I still use them to mix it up a bit. There is a good accessory system to make your characters better and some good character enhancement items. This game also has a more kiddy story, nothing up there with Final Fantasy. It started sort of basic but is getting better and has been pretty fun.
One thing that's cool that newer RPGs don't always have anymore, having things in the environment to click on to find items. This has always been fun to find items in houses or just around the town. But in this game they took a little too far. Pretty much everything you see from rocks to things in houses contain something. You can find gold, items, character enhancements, or nothing. The best thing to find are the enhancements as the items are pretty useless and you don't get much money. It also keeps track of your nothings and you can get really good accessories based on how many you have from a special character in the game. I've been trying to find all the stuff I can, it's fun searching stuff but gets a little crazy after a while. It's helping me really get my money's worth out of the game though. If you like RPGS this is a good one to play. it would be the perfect RPG to start on if you've never played one before since it's the super easy. Still I had to get it to help support Mistwalker, and can't with for their next title!
